Falmouth Fair Program 1910

The Falmouth Fair held its eighth annual exhibition from September 28- October 1, 1910. The Fair was incorporated and the officers for this year were: N.C. Ridgway, President; J.V. Oldham, Vice-President; J.R. Williams, Secretary; and R.L. Galloway, Treasurer. These men also served on the board, along with H.H. Shoemaker, H.E. Ducker, C.N. Ewing, J.B. Woolery, J.B. Thomas, C.W. Carnes, and E.S. Clarke. The following committees were appointed: Floral Hall, Track, Stalls, Gates, Water & Ice, and Show Ring. Admission for those over 12 years of age was 35 cents per day or a dollar for all four days.

This fair was a little different than what we see today. It included entries for draft horses, farm horses, harness horses, and mules. The ladies could compete in the driving ring and the hitching contest and boys, under 15 years of age could compete in a sack race. Of course, there was the baby show that is still a tradition. And that was just the first day! The second through fourth days were packed full of horse events and seemed to cover everything "horse"; from walkers, trotters, stallion and family; and even a category for "high acting" horses. The men also got to show off their riding skills on these days.

Meanwhile, the Floral Hall exhibits showed off poultry, fruits, with categories for quince, peaches, apples, plums, pears, and grapes; garden vegetables, honey, canned goods, including preserves and fruit; and flowers. There were also categories for handiwork like crochet, embroidery, and "fancy" work. An interesting category was "soil products". This category included rye, wheat, clover seed, Oats seed, pumpkins, squashes, Kershaws, and dried apples.

The advertisements of the day touted products from livestock dealers, groceries, newspapers, furniture, and banks. For a nice stroll down memory lane, you can look at the program for yourself here.
